Topological states of matter are revealed to be ubiquitous in solid-state materials

After 3 years of painstaking research, our collaboration’s complete survey of band topology in known solid-state materials was published today in Science.

For over 15 years, researchers have known that some solid-state materials exhibit exotic, robust electronic properties that can be described through the language of topology. However, topological materials were thought to be rare and esoteric. Over the last 3 years, our collaboration performed the most complete survey to-date of topological electronic properties in solid-state materials, finding, shockingly, that almost every material contains some topological aspects. Our results were published today in Science, and the data can be freely accessed through the accompanying Topological Materials Database. Our work was also highlighted in today’s MIT News.
